The Scholastic Technology Service Group is responsible for overseeing the continuous development, improvement and operation of e-Commerce, Enterprise applications, Internet and Intranet applications. Currently, these systems support multi million page views a day on the internet, and millions of e-commerce and non commerce transactions per year. The Scholastic Technology Service online environment is consists of P690s running AIX, Websphere Application Server, Websphere Commerce Server, and DB2. There is a storage area network (SAN) based on IBM’s Shark and McData’s fabric switch. The Windows environment is based on Intel servers. There is a legacy of Sun/Solaris, Oracle and ATG applications. Networking and security are based on Cisco products.
The Application Development team is responsible for the coding and integrating of the various applications running on the diverse web site. It works closely with the Project Management Office on approved scheduled projects. The team is generally responsible for:
E-Commerce application development employing J2EE and Microsoft standards
Integrating vendor packages
Database modeling and scripting
System documentation
Production defect repair and enhancements
POSITION OBJECTIVE
This person must understand the functional requirements and technical specifications of projects necessary for implementing technical solutions. This person must work effectively both as an individual contributor as well as a member of the development team in designing, developing and testing software application solutions.
KEY RELATIONSHIPS
This individual will have working relationships with various teams within Scholastic Technology Service Group and other divisions of scholastic:
All members of the Scholastic Technology Service Applications Development team.
Members of the Scholastic Technology Service Network Operations team.
Members of the PMO team (e.g., Project Managers).
Outside vendors and consultants.
Business units, backend systems, customer service teams, production support teams.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Applications Developer will:
Work as technical lead, writing and implementing technical specifications supporting the company’s web initiatives.
Collaborate with other members of the Applications Development team to implement technical solutions that adhere to project scope and timeline.
Partner with functional groups both internal to Scholastic Technology Service Group (e.g., project management, network operations.) and external consultants in order to provide tightly integrated solutions between the web applications and the legacy backend systems.
Provide technical guidance to more junior members of the development team.
Implement (i.e., design, develop, unit test) technical solutions for web/e-Commerce applications based on the functional requirements and technical specifications. Ensure the overall solution is reliable and scalable.
Write documentation as needed.
Continue to develop technical skills and learn new technologies as needed.
Adhere to industry standards and Scholastic Technology Service Group-defined guidelines and principles for software engineering.
Requirements/Skills:
Key characteristics contributing to the success of the Director include the ability to be flexible, accountable and reliable and work effectively in a team-working environment.
5+ years’ experience with J2EE applications in a UNIX/Linux environment.
3+ years’ experience with Websphere App Server, and WebSphere Commerce.
2+ years’ experience with EJB, Struts, MQ, JMS, DB2, XML, Web Services
Experience with Interwoven TeamSite, GoogleWebToolKit, Endeca Search Engine , Ajax, , LDAP, Oracle, SQL Server database.
Expertise in designing and building applications for scalability and redundancy.
BA or BS degree.
